MCI Concord Switch Facility

This 40,000 sf switch facility in an existing single story building was a design/build Mechanical, Electrical and Controls (MEC) project with a seven month schedule. Work included demolition of the existing roof and deck and replacement with steel structure and EPDM roof, demolition and replacement of floor slab and foundations.

The new MCI Worldcom portion of the building was split from the existing structure by a new 12″ demising wall that rises above the existing roof elevation and created two separate spaces. Our team installed new foundations for the new steel roof structure designed to support 156 pounds per square foot live load cable trays and rooftop mechanical equipment. The roof structure is a combination of wide flange beams, tube steel columns and open web joists.

Due to the massive power requirements, new service to the site required two 2,000 kva transformers and extensive custom built switchgear to accommodate the power loads required for the batteries and HVAC equipment. The HVAC system consists of 32 CRAC units placed below the access flooring creating a plenum cooling the rack area with condensing units “split” to the roof.
