PSU Shattuck Hall Renovation
The renovation of Shattuck Hall, built as an elementary school in 1915, began as a deferred maintenance project addressing seismic, mechanical/electrical systems and ADA upgrades. Today, this LEED Gold facility which houses PSU’s Department of Architecture, combines its historic fabric with innovative program solutions.
95% of the existing shell and structure and 50% of the existing interior materials were retained throughout the project, efforts which showcased Shattuck Hall as the first renovation on the PSU campus to purposefully model sustainability through re-use and reinvention. The University adhered to a theme of “systems on display,” with systems intentionally left exposed for use as a teaching tool.
The sustainable features that were incorporated into the project have saved PSU thousands of dollars in operational costs. An integrated ceiling system provides radiant heating and cooling, acoustical absorption and reflection of indirect lighting. The building contains an abundance of natural light and ventilation, operable windows throughout and a glazed wall which allows daylight flooding into the hallway.
