RiverEast Center

The RiverEast Center demonstrates a successful public/private partnership that transformed a 1951 abandoned warehouse into a healthy, vibrant, commercial office building with sustainable design. The reuse of an existing building not only helps maintain the historic character of the neighborhood, but also minimizes the environmental impact of demolishing an existing building in order to build a new one. This two-floor building played an important role in revitalizing the Central Eastside of Portland.

During the demolition, the project utilized the concrete demolition debris, both exterior and interior, as structural fill for footing excavations and on-site grading. The exterior west wall (CMU) at the first and second floor was entirely removed.  All of the material removed from the building was stored on-site, and sent through a crushing machine. All 600-tons of this approved fill was then utilized on-site for footing backfill, trench fill, and on-site grading for the new parking lot.
